The geeks (and freaks) have inherited the earth. So which
were you in high school? A jock? A cheerleader? A freak? A geek? Honestly I was
quite the roamer. I went from group to group, but in the long run, especially
after watching an entire season of the beloved Freaks and Geeks, I have to
admit… I was a freak. No biggie. I wore what I wanted, I did what I wanted,
hell I was even voted most outspoken in high school.
I always referred to the popular girls as “The Plastics”
(thanks Tina Fey!). My sister’s group of popular girls (including herself as
she was very explicitly a popular cheerleader) as “The Heathers.” Love you sis.
And I think today they are just called “Queen B’s.”
Back on subject, Freaks and Geeks, ok here we go. Lindsay
Weir, everyone’s friend but who truly hated high school and couldn’t wait to go
and explore the world outside of that small Michigan town. She had style. Ok
she looked like every other teen in the early 80’s late 70’s, or just like any
teen in the 90’s whose mother shopped at the local Burlington Coat Factory. And
Bill Haverchuck was my all time favorite character, but she had that kick ass
army green jacket.
To be specific:
The safari style/army-chic jacket is very much
coming back. Even the whole grunge, I don’t really give two shits style is now
cool. Not just among us lazy college kids…
This Garde Jacket by Verde available at Of a Kind
provides the right amount of Lindsay Weir-ness combined with motorcycle leather
arms to create a grunge kick-ass style.
Not only is this “Don’t Hate Appreciate” jacket from Topshop
almost identical to the always cool Lindsay Weir’s, but it hold a quite strong
message. Available at Topshop
This Up in Army contrast jacket holds a certain amount of
rough-ness to it. A little more conventional, but still says, “don’t even try…
I’m bad ass.” Available at Tobi
This may be more far-fetched than the traditional army coat,
but if I’m trying, which I usually am, to convey a certain amount of fear in
someone… I’m bad-ass this jacket would be my go to. Available at Chic Nova
Now jean jackets definitely install a certain amount of fear
in people, certainly during my childhood. They said, “yeah it may be chilly
out… but I don’t need a coat, I have my
jeans jacket… get at me!” This is just a jean version of the Weir army jacket.
Plus there is some pretty sweet decal on the reverse! Available at Tobi
Hell Millie even tried the trend, and you know what she
always sings… “Jesus is just alright with me, Jesus is just alright oh yeahh.”
Goodnight my fellow jocks, cheerleaders, and Freaks and
Geeks of the world.
